Coach Taylor, Mr. Adams honored

At the February Wilburton Public School Board Meeting, the Board unanimously approved to name and dedicate the Wilburton High School Gym to “Wilburton--A Dedicated Community.” Additionally, they approved the naming of the basketball court as the Coach Sam Taylor Basketball Floor and the gym’s hospitality room as the Charles Adams Hospitality Room. The motion was made by member Mike Elder and seconded by member Lance Mathis to honor this community and these two former longtime Wilburton Diggers.

Coach Taylor was Head Girls Basketball Coach at WHS for many years. He came to Wilburton in 1965 and built a girls basketball dynasty before retiring in 1987. During his time at WHS, he produced a 251-114 record, 8 All-Staters, 3 Oklahoma-Texas All Stars, 2 trips to the State Basketball Tournament, and many area, regional, district and conference championships. He was a founding member of the Oklahoma Girls Basketball Association and was inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984. In his career, Coach Taylor coached most other sports including football, as well as being an administrator, counselor, and teacher.

Mr. Adams grew up in Wilburton and was a1947 graduate of Wilburton High School. He was very proud of his longtime educational career serving as an administrator, coach, and teacher with the majority of this time being for Wilburton Public Schools.  He retired as Principal of Wilburton High School in 1987and then served on the Wilburton School Board for over 25 years. He always stated that he bled purple all of his life. He was dearly loved by his former students and always referred to them as “his kids.”

The gym, court and hospitality room will be officially dedicated at the start of the 2019-20 basketball season and will bear the names of these honorees.
