The Wilburton Varsity Academic Team placed second overall at the Stigler Brain Bowl on Saturday, January 6. This is the team’s best performance ever at the annual Brain Bowl. The competition hosted 29 teams, both varsity and junior varsity. The schools attended ranged in size from Class A to 4A and included both public and private schools.
The morning games consist of pool play. Wilburton varsity was undefeated during this session of games. They defeated Chelsea, Morris JV, Caney Valley, and Holdenville. These wins guaranteed the team a spot in the afternoon competition. The team’s average score per came was 220 points. They were seated fourth. They defeated Preston in the first round with a score of 290 to 260. They surprisingly defeated Tulsa Regent’s Prep in their second game 210 to 180. Finally, they were defeated by Anadarko in a very close game with a final score of 220 to 230. Overall, the team had a very impressive day.
The varsity team members include, Captain, Gilles, Devon and Journey, LeeAnn, Andrew and James. James was the teams’s high scorer with 560 points in 7 games, an average of 40 points a quarter. James was also named to the All-Tournament team, recognition for the eight high scorers of the morning pool play. James was the second highest scorer overall with an average of 35 points a quarter. He also made the All-Tournament Team in last year’s 2017 Stigler Brain Bowl. James was outscored by Tyson from Plainview, who averaged 41 points per quarter in the morning’s pool play.
The Junior Varsity academic team also competed at the Stigler Brain Bowl. Team members include Stage, Gavin, Kristy, Nikkol, Morgan, LaShan, and Morgan. The JV won two games during pool play against Colcord and Colcord JV. They lost to Preston, Vanoss, and Riverfield. They were not able to advance to the afternoon tournament. The JV’s high scorer was Stage with almost 25 points a quarter.
