“The game of life is a lot like football. You have to tackle your problems, block your fears, and score your points when you get the opportunity.”
I love the writings of author Lewis Grizzard; however sometimes, his humor is so dry that it gets lost in the rhetoric. The above quote of his does not. It is just the southern author’s way of relating life to a beloved sport of America.
As our fall sports and activities are coming to an end, we are starting to get a clearer picture of what this school year holds for our students and our employees. Classroom teachers are now busy working with students on results from pre-testing. Bus pick-ups and drop offs have become a routine, and school site offices have figured out who are the ones to most likely be tardy. The best way to describe our schools right now would be to say, “We are in the Groove.” And, I am proud to say it appears to be a successful groove.
At Wilburton Public Schools, we believe that if our students become more involved in our school’s activities, then they have a much better chance to “block fears and score points when opportunities appear. This is the reason that we try to offer a wide variety programs for our young people. In fact over the past few years, instead of cutting activities, we have increased our offerings especially if the interest was there. We are proud to say that we have 90% of students who participate in at least two or more extracurricular opportunities. This happens because we have dedicated employees who care about their students and a proud community who believes in its young people. That’s a win in my books!
“People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society.”
