August 2020 – First Day of School

Welcome to the official start of the 2020-21 school year! I look forward to this time of year every year as there is never a shortage of excitement and encouragement. I am reminded of that feeling of support and optimism that each of you brings to our school community every day. It may look different this year, but it feels like that same great start to a new school year of learning, growth and opportunity.

As we begin the school year with our 3 Option Plan for Journey to Learning, I ask for your partnership and support in making our Traditional, Blended, and Virtual Learning rigorous, engaging and impactful for all of our students. In order to do so, work sites and expectations will look different this year. I want to be clear about the context we are operating within and share our expectations to ensure that we are all adhering to the important health and safety guidelines that we have in place.

The WPS Board of Education has approved policies and guidance that it believes is what is best for our community during this unprecedented time. Please visit our school homepage at and click on our Journey to Learning link for our latest information. Also, this information will be continually updated.

Only WPS students, employees or essential visitors (those fulfilling critical needs for the building e.g. emergency personnel or facilities repair crews) are allowed in school buildings. We are asking that our students and employees complete a self-assessment every day before coming to school. This self-assessment includes:

  • Temperature of 100°F or higher

  • Dry cough

  • Sore throat

  • Shortness of breath

  • Nasal congestion, if any of the above symptoms are included. Please recognize that nasal congestion may be due to many factors during this time of year (e.g. allergies).

Thank you for keeping yourselves and others safe and healthy as we begin this school year. Even though your summer plans may have changed, we hope you enjoyed time to relax and have fun with your families. Welcome back Diggers!!
