WHS Academic Team Wins Area!

The Wilburton High School Academic Team won the Area Tournament on Saturday, January 18.  This win enables the team to advance to State Finals.  The State Tournament will take place on Saturday, February 8 in El Reno, Oklahoma at Redlands Community College.

The team is coached by Lisa Baker and Gordon Bockus.  Team members include seniors Elisabeth Dunn, Mason Evans, Chance Reeves, Kristen Smith and juniors Gus Robinson and Amanda Hawthorne.  Gus Robinson serves as the team captain.

To win the Area Tournament, Wilburton defeated Okemah, Oktaha, and Wister.  The team averaged 263 points per game.  They defeated all three teams by a margin of more than 100 points.  Chance Reeves was the team’s high scorer with 170 points in the three games.

The team was Regional Champions earlier this season.  The last time Wilburton won the Area Championship was in 2005.  Wilburton has never won both the Regional and Area Championship in the same season before now.  Four of the six team members were previously on a state qualifying team in the 2011-2012 season.  They were state runner-ups that year and look forward to the opportunity to bring home a state championship this year.
