WHS Academic Team Regional Champions!

On Saturday, November 11, the Wilburton High School Academic Team earned the title of Regional Champions.  They defeated Talihina with a score of 320 to 100 in their first game.  They defeated Howe 230 to 170 in their second game.  In the final game, they defeated Warner 200 to 190.

Team members include seniors Devon Cox, Gilles Goddard, Journey Dees-West, and Sandra Karstens; junior Gunner Henry; sophomores James McCabe, Andrew Hawthorne, Stage Watkins, Nikkol Clarke, LaShan Jackon, Kristy Martin, Adam Milligan, Bridgette Pelt, Smokey Smith, Gavin Sockey, Morgan Anderson; and freshman Morgan Francis.  Gilles Goddard serves as captain of the team.  James McCabe was the team’s high scorer for Saturday’s games with an impressive total of 230 points.  The team is coached by Lisa Baker and Aaron Milligan.

The team will compete in the area academic tournament on Saturday, January 13 in order to continue their road to the state tournament where they hope to repeat their championship from last year.

The team has also been competing on Roger State University’s quiz bowl program titled “I Want Answers!”  They won their first round of competition against Adair.  The program aired on October 19.  It can be viewed on Youtube or the Rogers State website.  The team will appear again on the program on Thursday, December 14th against Claremore Sequoyah.  It can be viewed on RSU’s channel 35.
