By Team Co-Sponsor Mrs. Baker:
The Wilburton High School Academic Team was quite busy this past week.
On Thursday night (November 10), they made their television premiere on I Want Answers! If you missed the broadcast, it can be viewed on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIeQ-C8FPUg). Wilburton readily defeated Mounds during the competition, scoring 290 points to their 70 points. The team advances to the next round against Stigler. The next episode will air on December 29 on RSU Channel 35.
Also on Thursday night, both the varsity and junior varsity completed their conference season with the Blue Mountain Conference. The varsity team finished the season with a night of three wins, which helped move them into second place overall in conference. The junior varsity team suffered their only loss of the season; however, they still earned first place overall. These teams will both be honored at an awards’ ceremony this coming Thursday (November 17) at McAlester High School.
On Saturday (November 12) the team traveled to the Regional Tournament in Wewoka to earn the title of Regional Champions. They defeated Antlers in their first round with a score of 320 to 90. They defeated Talihina in their second round with a score of 200 to 130. Finally, they easily defeated Konawa 260 to 50 to win the championship. The team will have the top in seed in the Area Tournament to be held in January at Wilburton High School. Freshman James McCabe was the team’s high scorer with 140 points for the tournament. Captain and senior Roy Phipps scored 110 points. Senior Gloria Evans and freshman Andrew Hawthorne each scored 80 points. Senior colt Petty had 30 points. This was the last regional tournament for coach Gordon Bockus and seniors Cody Johnston, Roy Phipps, Gloria Evans, Colt Petty, and Joe Dunagan.
