“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”  Roy T. Bennett,  “The Light in the Heart”

Happy 2018 from Wilburton Public Schools! At this time of year when we are starting second semester, my thoughts seem always to turn to our young people who will be leaving us in May—Our Wilburton High School Senior Class 2018. I wonder about their future once they leave these “halls.” I think about their professional careers, their families, and mostly about their choices.

Today’s culture is very captivated with “superheroes.”  They fill the screens of television and movies: Wonder Woman, Batman, Wolverine, Superman, Cat Woman—the list goes on and on.  When this senior class started middle school in the sixth grade, we started to try and integrate the subject of choosing wisely every day through the various curriculums.  The saying, that I remember the most, was one we used with them during their library/reading time.  “Be the HERO of your own story!”

And now, that time is here for this class. In essence, they begin their own story in May. This class of young men and women are outstanding. They are intelligent, kind, respectful, loving and generous.  They like each other and have fun. And, I believe that they are almost ready to make those wise choices. They can be the “SUPERHERO” of their own story. How exciting!

These seniors will be missed, but I look forward to these last few months with them here at WHS and observing how they start writing their own story.

“There is a superhero in all of us; we just need the courage to put on the cape.”  Superman
